Choosing a Version
📌 For most users (2024 or 2025): AutoCAD 2024 is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, making it the recommended choice for enterprise deployments. AutoCAD 2025 has the latest features if you want cutting-edge AI tools.
📖 File Compatibility: AutoCAD saves to DWG format. Each major release has a corresponding DWG file format version. You can save backward (2024 DWG can save to 2018 DWG format), but you cannot open a 2024 DWG in older software without converting first.
DWG Format Versions
| DWG Format | AutoCAD Versions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DWG 2018 | 2018–2025 | Current format for all recent releases |
| DWG 2013 | 2013–2017 | Save-as option for older compatibility |
| DWG 2010 | 2010–2012 | Use if sharing with very old software |
| DWG 2007 | 2007–2009 | Rarely needed |
