AutoCAD has two distinct working environments: Model Space and Paper Space. Understanding the difference is the foundation of all professional drawing production.
Where you draw everything at real-world 1:1 size. A 30-foot wall is drawn 360 drawing units long (if 1 unit = 1 inch). Model Space has no paper size — it is effectively infinite. You never scale your geometry here.
Your virtual sheet of paper. This is where you place title blocks, borders, notes, and viewports — rectangular windows that show your Model Space geometry at a specific drawing scale. You always plot from Paper Space at 1:1.
Layout tabs appear at the bottom of the AutoCAD window (beside the Model tab). Right-click any Layout tab to: rename it, copy it, move it, or open Page Setup Manager for that specific sheet.
The Page Setup Manager is the control panel for every Layout tab. It tells AutoCAD what size paper you're working on, what plotter to use, what scale to plot at, and how to handle line weights and colors.

AutoCAD includes a built-in virtual PDF plotter called DWG To PDF.pc3. This is the standard tool for producing plot-ready PDF files directly from AutoCAD without any third-party software.

Use these tables to configure your Layout tabs. The Paper Space LIMITS column shows the coordinates to set using the LIMITS command in Paper Space (not Model Space). The Border Inset column is the recommended title block border offset from the paper edge.

Follow these steps to configure a complete, plot-ready Layout tab from scratch. This workflow applies to all disciplines and sheet sizes.

Setting LIMITS in Paper Space defines the working area of your sheet. This keeps you oriented while working on the layout. Make sure you are in Paper Space (not inside a viewport) when running this command.

Insert your title block as a block (INSERT command) at 0,0 in Paper Space at scale 1. The title block DWG should be drawn at full paper size in its own file (e.g., a 36×24 unit border for Arch D). Common title block content:
- ✓Outer border at paper edge (or at printable area boundary)
- ✓Inner border / margin line (typically 0.5" from outer border, 1.5" on binding edge)
- ✓Title block panel (bottom right or right side) with project info, sheet number, revision history
- ✓North arrow placeholder (for site plans)
- ✓Scale bar placeholder
- 1Make sure you're in Paper Space (not inside a viewport). Type
PSPACEor click outside any viewport. - 2Create a new layer called VP or VIEWPORT. Set it to non-plotting (the printer icon in Layer Manager). This hides viewport borders in plots.

Plot Style Tables control how layers and objects appear when plotted — specifically line weight, color, and screening. There are two types used in AutoCAD.
Each AutoCAD color number (1–255) maps to a specific plotted line weight and output color. The most common system — especially in architectural and engineering firms using layer color standards.
Each object or layer gets a named plot style assigned (e.g., "Heavy," "Medium," "Light"). More flexible than CTB but requires a style to be assigned to every object. Less common in practice but preferred in some larger firms.

A smart title block replaces static text with attributes — editable fields embedded inside a block. When you insert the block, AutoCAD displays a dialogue box (a form) prompting you to fill in each field: project name, drawn by, date, sheet number, and so on. Every attribute value is stored in the block and can be batch-edited, extracted to a spreadsheet, or linked to auto-updating Fields that change automatically as your drawing set grows.
AutoCAD attributes have three phases in their life cycle:

Before you create the block, draw your title block border geometry, then place all your attribute definitions inside it using ATTDEF. Each attribute becomes one fill-in field in the insertion dialogue.

ATTDEF→ fill in the dialogue for each field → click OK → place the attribute text exactly where the answer text should appear inside the title block panel. Do this for every field in the order you want them to appear in the dialogue. - 4Select everything and run BLOCK — type
BLOCK→ name it (e.g.,TB-ARCH-D) → set the insertion point to the lower-left corner of the sheet border → select all geometry and all ATTDEF objects → check Delete from drawing → OK. - 5Save the file as a .dwt template — File → Save As → Files of type: AutoCAD Drawing Template (.dwt) → save to your template folder. The title block is now part of the template.

WBLOCK→ select the block → save as a standalone .dwg. This lets you INSERT it into any drawing at any time, not just from the template.
When you type INSERT (or CLASSICINSERT for the classic dialogue) and select your title block, AutoCAD walks you through the attributes in definition order. In the classic Insert workflow, a second dialogue — the Edit Attributes form — appears after placement.
Each row in this form corresponds to one ATTDEF you placed. Fill in the values → click OK → AutoCAD places the title block with all your text in the correct positions. Every subsequent INSERT on a new Layout tab gives you a fresh copy of this form.
A Field is a special value that AutoCAD updates automatically when you regenerate or save. You can use Fields as the default value of an attribute, or insert them directly as the attribute's text content. Key Fields for title blocks:

To insert a Field as an attribute default: In the ATTDEF dialogue, right-click inside the Default field → Insert Field → select the Field category and field type → configure format → OK. The field code appears as grey text in the Default box. When the block is inserted, the field resolves to its current value.
This is the most powerful smart title block feature. When your drawing file is part of a Sheet Set (.dst file), the CurrentSheetNumber and NumberOfSheets Fields update automatically every time sheets are added, removed, or renumbered — with no manual editing required.

SHEETSET(or SSM) → New Sheet Set Wizard → create a .dst file that groups all drawing sheets for the project. - 2Add each Layout to the Sheet Set — in the Sheet Set Manager palette, right-click a subset → Import Layout as Sheet, or use New Sheet → select the Layout tab from your .dwg file.

BEDIT→ select your title block → in Block Editor, double-click the SHEET_NO attribute → in the Default field, right-click → Insert Field → SheetSet → Sheet → CurrentSheetNumber → OK. - 5Set SHEET_TOTAL the same way — same process, but Field type = SheetSet → Sheet Set → NumberOfSheets. This counts all sheets in the .dst file.
- 6Close and save the Block Editor — click Close Block Editor → Save Changes.
- 7Run ATTSYNC — type
ATTSYNC→ select your title block by name → Update. This pushes the Field-linked defaults to all existing instances of the block in your drawing. - 8Add a new Layout and see it work — add the Layout to your Sheet Set, assign it a number. Every sheet's SHEET_TOTAL attribute now shows the new total automatically on the next REGEN or file open.
After inserting the title block, double-click the block to open the Enhanced Attribute Editor (EATTEDIT). This is the primary tool for editing attribute values on already-inserted blocks.
If you edit your title block definition (add a new attribute, remove one, or change a tag name) using BEDIT or REFEDIT, existing insertions of the block will NOT automatically update. Run ATTSYNC to push the updated definition to all instances.

For studios that don't use Sheet Set Manager, you can create a fully custom fill-out dialogue using a DCL file (Dialogue Control Language) called by an AutoLISP routine. This gives you a form that pops up with any command, auto-counts your Layout tabs, and populates the title block attributes — all with one command.
A DCL file defines the layout of a dialogue box (labels, text input boxes, dropdowns, buttons). An AutoLISP routine loads the DCL, displays the dialogue, collects the input, calculates the total number of Layout tabs using (vla-get-layouts ...), and then writes the values to the title block attributes using ATTEDIT or SSGET + ENTMOD.
APPLOAD → load titleblock.lsp. Run the command FILLTB — the dialogue box appears, the sheet total is already filled in, you complete the rest and click OK. The title block updates instantly.Once your drawing set has smart title block attributes, you can extract all of them into an Excel spreadsheet or an AutoCAD table using DATAEXTRACTION. This is how you generate a drawing register automatically from your title blocks.

It also controls the attribute dialogue order.
